Active exhaust flaps are a feature manufacturers love and enthusiasts hate. Sold as a "Sport mode" gimmick that opens up the exhaust on demand for a louder sound, they spend most of their lives closed — keeping the exhaust note muted during normal driving. Enthusiasts who paid for a performance exhaust system want it making noise all the time. Our exhaust flap delete keeps the flap permanently open at ECU level.
What active exhaust flaps do
Electronically controlled valves are fitted in the exhaust system — typically at the rear muffler or further upstream — to vary the exhaust path between "quiet" (most exhaust flow routed through restrictive baffling) and "loud" (most exhaust flow routed through an open path). The ECU opens the flap under specific conditions: Sport mode, high engine RPM, high load, or specific drive modes.
The result is a car that's quiet when the manufacturer wants it quiet (emissions test cycles, drive-by noise tests, urban driving), and louder when the manufacturer thinks the customer wants it louder. The catch: many drivers want it louder all the time, including on motorway cruising, light-throttle driving, and on cold starts when the flap is typically closed.
What our delete does
The ECU is reprogrammed to:
- Always command the flap to the fully open position, regardless of drive mode, RPM, load, or temperature
- Ignore actuator position feedback so the ECU doesn't log "flap not in commanded position" codes
- Eliminate exhaust-flap-related DTCs and prevent the MIL light from triggering
- Preserve all other engine and exhaust functions — the change affects only the flap actuation logic

Important hardware note
For all exhaust flap delete solutions, the actuator plug must be physically disconnected after the ECU file is flashed. The ECU stops commanding the actuator, but with the plug still connected, residual electrical activity can damage the actuator over time. Disconnecting the plug (and optionally removing the actuator entirely) is part of the standard procedure on most platforms.
Best results with the right setup
Exhaust flap delete is most dramatic on cars that already have a louder-than-factory exhaust philosophy — performance variants, AMG, M, RS, JCW, GT3 and similar models. On standard models with restrictive factory exhausts, the change is more subtle. Combinations that work particularly well:
- Aftermarket sport exhaust + flap delete — the sports exhaust unleashes the sound, the flap delete keeps it unleashed all the time
- Decat + flap delete — removes the secondary muffler effect of the primary catalytic converter
- Flap delete + burble activation — combination unlocks the full overrun crackle effect
Legal use
Exhaust flap delete typically increases drive-by noise levels above the OEM-certified figures. It may fail vehicle inspection tests in jurisdictions that test exhaust noise (TÜV, MOT noise testing in some configurations, NCT). It is not legal for use on the public highway in jurisdictions that test exhaust noise to OEM specification.
