What "burbles" actually are

The sound enthusiasts call "burbles" — also "pop and bang", "crackle map", or "overrun map" depending on the audience — happens when small quantities of fuel are deliberately injected into the exhaust stream during overrun (closed-throttle deceleration above a threshold RPM). The fuel ignites in the hot exhaust manifold or downpipe rather than in the combustion chamber, producing the characteristic sharp pops, occasional cracks, and on aggressive setups, visible flames at the tailpipe.

The effect is created at the ECU level by:

• Holding the throttle plate open slightly on overrun (small bypass to keep air flowing)
• Retarding ignition timing significantly during the overrun window
• Injecting extra fuel that doesn't get a chance to burn properly in-cylinder
• Allowing that unburned fuel to ignite in the hot exhaust components

Done right by a qualified tuner, the effect is controlled, repeatable, and harmless. Done badly, it can damage catalysts, crack manifolds, and stress turbine wheels.

Best results with the right hardware

Burble effects are dramatically amplified by certain hardware modifications. While not required, the following make burble maps significantly more audible:

• Sports exhaust or full-system aftermarket exhaust — less restriction, louder pops
• Decat or sport-cat downpipe — primary cats absorb a lot of overrun sound; removing or upgrading them transforms the effect
• Resonator delete — removes a built-in muffler often included to suppress overrun noise
• Active exhaust flap delete (open position) — for cars with electronically controlled exhaust valves, opening them on overrun unlocks the full sound

Burble maps also work on factory exhausts but with less audible drama — the effect is there, but quieter.

Legal use

Burble maps create periods of unburned fuel ignition outside the combustion chamber. They can fail noise tests, create excessive emissions during overrun, and increase mechanical stress on exhaust components. They are illegal for use on the public highway in most jurisdictions, including Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the European Union.
