The EVAP — Evaporative Emission Control System — is the network of valves, hoses, and a charcoal canister that captures fuel vapours from the tank and routes them to the engine to be burned rather than vented to atmosphere. It's a low-pressure, low-flow system that should work invisibly. In practice it's the source of some of the most persistent "small leak detected" fault codes on modern vehicles — and the codes are notoriously hard to diagnose and fix.
For vehicles used in motorsport, off-road, or custom performance applications, our EVAP system delete eliminates the purge control logic and related fault codes at ECU level.
What the EVAP system does
Fuel evaporates from the tank — slowly at low temperatures, faster at high temperatures and after refuelling. Modern emissions regulations require those vapours to be captured rather than vented. The system works in stages:
- Vapours leave the tank through a rollover/vent valve into a charcoal canister (typically mounted at the rear of the vehicle near the tank)
- The canister stores the vapours, adsorbed onto activated charcoal
- The ECU periodically opens a purge valve, drawing fresh air through the canister, which releases the stored vapours into the intake manifold where they're burned in the engine
- The system runs leak diagnostics by pressurising or vacuum-decaying the closed network and watching for pressure changes outside expected ranges
Why EVAP systems cause problems
- Tiny leaks trigger codes. The system tests for leaks down to 0.5mm equivalent diameter. A cracked filler-cap seal, a damaged rollover valve, a hose-clamp slightly loose — any of these trigger P0440-series codes.
- Canister saturation. Over years, the activated charcoal saturates with hydrocarbons and stops absorbing efficiently. The canister can also be contaminated by liquid fuel after a tank overfill (filling past the auto-shutoff).
- Purge valve failure. The valve sticks open (engine ingests too much vapour, runs rich) or sticks closed (canister fills, no relief on filling, fuel smell at pump).
- Vent valve failure. The valve that closes during leak diagnostics fails open or closed.
- Persistent codes after repair. Even after the underlying fault is fixed, the codes can take days of normal driving (specific drive cycles) to clear from memory. Many owners simply live with the MIL until the next inspection forces a fix.
Symptoms of EVAP trouble
- MIL (check engine light) on with EVAP codes stored
- DTCs: P0440, P0441, P0442, P0443, P0446, P0455, P0456, P0457, P0496
- Fuel smell at the rear of the vehicle
- Difficulty refuelling — pump auto-shutoff triggers repeatedly before tank is full
- Slight running issues at idle if purge valve sticks open
- Failed emissions / inspection due to MIL on
The off-road / motorsport delete solution
For vehicles used in motorsport, off-road, custom performance builds, or restoration of pre-OBD-II vehicles, an EVAP delete eliminates the system at ECU level:
- ECU calibration: The engine map is rewritten to disable the purge control logic, suspend leak diagnostics, ignore EVAP-related sensor readings, and prevent fault-code logging for the deleted system. This is where a BoostCo tuning file does the work.
- Physical disconnection: The EVAP purge valve actuator plug must be physically disconnected for the delete to be fully effective. Optionally the canister and associated plumbing can be removed for weight saving and engine-bay cleanup.
- Optional sealing: Where the canister is removed entirely, the tank vent line typically needs a small breather filter to prevent tank pressurisation.
The result: no more EVAP DTCs, MIL stays off, purge-valve-related rough running eliminated, simpler tank breathing for race fuel and large-capacity tank applications.
Legal use
EVAP is an emissions control system. Delete is illegal for use on the public highway in most jurisdictions, including Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the European Union. BoostCo provides this solution strictly for motorsport, off-road, and custom performance applications. The customer is responsible for ensuring their use complies with local laws.

How to order
Read your ECU file using KESS3, K-TAG, Autotuner, MPPS, Dimsport or compatible tool. Submit via the A.R.C.H.I.E. portal with your vehicle details. Files typically returned within 5 minutes. Get in touch if you need to confirm compatibility for a specific ECU variant first.
